Whitney Smith was born in Moses Lake, Washington in 1970 and has resided in California since 1988.She started making art at an early age, painting and drawing since she was a small child. She has been working in ceramics since her first clay throwing class in 1994 at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz. While Whitney went on to obtain a degree in Anthropology from the University of California in Santa Cruz, her intense interest and love of pottery led her to open her own studio and pursue a career in ceramic art.

Whitney spent many of her early years on her family's farm in Washington, where she developed a love for landscape and the things that grow outdoors. Her work is primarily informed by her obsession with flowers and other forms found in nature. Whitney has also been strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau and Arts & Craft movement of the late 19th and early 20th Century. She loves the look and feel of old things, and her work reflects her appreciation of the craftmanship of an earlier time.
